The Organization:
Skwlāx te Secwépemcúl̓ecw (SteS) is traditionally known as Skwlāx, which translates to Black Bear in Secwépemctsín, the traditional language. The community has demonstrated a strong vision and drive in economic development. Through the creation of Quaaout Lodge, Talking Rock Golf, and Le7ka Spa, SteS has helped promote Secwépemc culture while developing world-class accommodation and leisure experiences. The Band has not only led the way in tourism within the Shuswap region, but has also worked to challenge stereotypes and perceptions of reserve life with a focus on community development, wellness, and cultural identity.
The Health and Wellness department is one of the four core pillars of Skwlāx te Secwépemcúl̓ecw, alongside Administration, Economic Development, and Lands. The Wellness department delivers a range of programs and services that support the health and well-being of community members. These include primary care, substance use services, HeadStart program, family and youth support, and culturally grounded approaches to healing. The Community Health Nurse plays an important role in delivering health services that align with this commitment.
Job Summary:
Reporting to the Health Manager, the Shuttle Bus Driver is responsible for providing safe and timely transportation services for community members, clients, and staff. This includes transport to medical appointments, community events, cultural activities, and scheduled shuttle routes. The role supports the day-to-day operations of the Health and Wellness department by maintaining vehicles, coordinating schedules, assisting passengers as needed, and ensuring adherence to safety, confidentiality, and cultural protocols.
The Shuttle Bus Driver contributes to the wellbeing of community members by ensuring reliable, safe, and culturally respectful transportation services. This role requires attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to operate independently while collaborating with other members of the department.
Core Responsibilities:
Transportation Operations
- Plan and schedule transportation routes considering community members’ needs and operational requirements
- Safely transport community members and staff to appointments, events, and other designated locations
- Assist community members with boarding and disembarking, including individuals with mobility or other special needs
- Operate vehicles in compliance with all traffic laws, regulations, and safety policies
- Maintain accurate trip logs, passenger records, and other documentation as required
Vehicle Maintenance and Safety
- Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections, reporting any defects or maintenance issues to the Health Manager or Office Manager
- Perform routine vehicle maintenance including cleaning, refueling, and fluid checks
- Coordinate with the Office Manager on scheduled vehicle servicing and repairs
- Follow emergency procedures in the event of a vehicle incident or accident
Cultural and Community Engagement
- Uphold cultural safety, humility, and trauma-informed practices in all interactions with community members
- Communicate effectively with Health and Wellness staff regarding appointment schedules, transportation needs, and passenger requirements
- Ensure confidentiality and privacy of all community member information and documentation
Program Support and Recordkeeping
- Maintain and submit accurate weekly records detailing fuel use, incident reports, accident reports, vehicle condition, and other required documentation
- Assist with coordination of transportation-related program activities and community events
- Support Health and Wellness staff in operational and logistical needs related to transportation services
Basic Qualifications | Requirements for position:
- High school diploma (Grade 12) or equivalent
- Valid BC Class 4A or 4B Driver’s License
- Current First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain within 3 months of employment
- Completion of Violence Prevention training within 3 months of employment
- Clean driver’s abstract and excellent driving record
- Experience driving in remote areas under various weather conditions
- Familiarity with routine vehicle maintenance and minor repairs
- Experience providing transportation, particularly with individuals with disabilities, is an asset
- Ability to navigate the Southern Stl’atl’imx Region using maps or onboard navigation systems
- Good communication skills, including de-escalation and supportive communication
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Experience working in or with First Nations or Indigenous organizations is an asset
- Knowledge of Secwépemc language and culture is considered an asset
- Ability to manage sensitive information with professionalism, discretion, and cultural sensitivity
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector clearance
- Must be able to commute or relocate to Chase, BC or surrounding areas prior to start of employment
Physical Demands:
- Prolonged periods of sitting while driving
- Assisting community members with boarding and disembarking
- Performing vehicle inspections and maintenance tasks, including lifting or moving supplies and equipment
- Maintaining alertness and focus for safe driving in all weather conditions
- Handling occasional emergency situations with composure and efficiency
Working Conditions:
The Shuttle Bus Driver works primarily in vehicle-based environments, with exposure to various weather conditions, road conditions, and community settings. Flexibility in work hours may be required to meet transportation demands, including early mornings, evenings, or occasional weekend services.
The role involves regular interaction with Health and Wellness staff and community members, requiring professionalism, cultural respect, and adherence to privacy protocols.
