The Organization:
Skwlāx te Secwépemcúl̓ecw (SteS) is traditionally known as Skwlāx, which translates to Black Bear in Secwépemctsín, the traditional language. The community has demonstrated a strong vision and drive in economic development. Through the creation of Quaaout Lodge, Talking Rock Golf, and Le7ka Spa, SteS has helped promote Secwépemc culture while developing world-class accommodation and leisure experiences. The Band has not only led the way in tourism within the Shuswap region but has also worked to challenge stereotypes and perceptions of reserve life with a focus on community development, wellness, and cultural identity.
The Administration Department is one of the four core pillars of Skwlāx te Secwépemcúl̓ecw, alongside Health and Wellness, Economic Development, and Lands. This department plays a key role in ensuring the effective operation of the organization by supporting governance, facilitating internal communication, and implementing organizational policies and procedures. The Administration Department works collaboratively across all departments to promote operational efficiency, accountability, and a healthy, inclusive workplace culture.
Job Summary:
Reporting to the Jennifer Cormack, the Cleaner is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, hygiene, and general upkeep of SteS buildings. This role supports a safe, healthy, and welcoming environment for staff, community members, and visitors and ensures that cleaning standards are consistently met in all assigned areas.
Core Responsibilities:
Facility Cleaning and Upkeep
- Perform daily, weekly, and periodic cleaning of administrative and health buildings, including offices, common areas, washrooms, and other designated spaces
- Dust, sweep, mop, vacuum, and sanitize surfaces as required
- Clean windows, walls, and other fixtures according to scheduled tasks or as requested
- Dispose of garbage, recycling, and other waste materials in accordance with organizational procedures
- Maintain cleaning equipment and supplies in good working order and report any maintenance needs
Health, Safety, and Compliance
- Follow workplace health and safety procedures, including WHMIS standards
- Use cleaning products in a safe and responsible manner, considering allergies or sensitivities of building occupants
- Report any hazards, spills, or other safety concerns to the appropriate supervisor
- Support infection prevention and control procedures, as required
Team Collaboration and Support
- Coordinate with area managers or designated supervisors regarding cleaning priorities and schedules
- Contribute to a positive and cooperative work environment
- Perform other related duties as required to support building operations
Basic Qualifications | Requirements for position:
- Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
- Previous experience in cleaning, janitorial, or housekeeping work, preferably in office or institutional settings is considered an asset
- Knowledge of cleaning procedures, materials, and safe use of equipment
- Understanding of occupational health and safety standards, including WHMIS
- Ability to follow instructions and established procedures
- Strong time management, organization, and reliability
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team-oriented environment
- Experience working in or with First Nations or Indigenous organizations is an asset
- Knowledge of Secwépemc language and culture is considered an asset
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector
- Must be able to commute or relocate to Chase, BC or surrounding areas prior to start of employment
Physical Demands:
The Cleaner role involves physical activity and manual tasks, including:
- Standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying cleaning equipment and supplies
- Repetitive hand movements for tasks such as mopping, dusting, and scrubbing
- Occasional lifting of objects up to 25 pounds
- Working in various indoor environments, including offices, hallways, and washrooms
Working Conditions:
The Cleaner works primarily indoors in administrative and health facilities. Most responsibilities occur during standard business hours; however, flexibility may be required to accommodate cleaning schedules outside of regular office hours.
This position involves routine exposure to cleaning chemicals and equipment. Maintaining safety, professionalism, and discretion in all work activities is essential.
Equipment and Software:
- Standard cleaning equipment and tools, including mops, vacuums, brooms, and cleaning chemicals
- Basic office equipment such as computers or telephones for reporting or communication purposes, as required
Confidentiality:
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all organizational, personnel, and building-related information in accordance with SteS policies and applicable legislation
- Handle sensitive information professionally and with discretion
- Ensure secure storage and management of all records related to cleaning and building maintenance
- Uphold the privacy and trust of all staff, visitors, community members, and building occupants in all activities
